 As part of their ongoing commitment to promoting early literacy and language development among Black children and families in their Affiliate community, BCDI-Hampton Roads distributed "At the Farmer's Market" books to 150 children at the Mallory Head Start Center in Hampton, Virginia earlier this year.

Earlier this year, BCDI-Hampton Roads President, Darlene Walker, welcomed David Johns, the Executive Director of the National Black Justice Coalition, to the Hampton Roads area for the Hampton Roads Community Action Program's Community Builders Awards Dinner. 

Body: Earlier this year, BCDI-Hampton Roads President, Darlene Walker, welcomed David Johns, the Executive Director of the National Black Justice Coalition, to the Hampton Roads area. Mr. Johns served as the Keynote Speaker for the Hampton Roads Community Action Program's Community Builders Awards Dinner. This event was held on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at the Marriot City Center in Newport News, Virginia. Mrs. Walker, the Dinner Chair, is also an Executive Board Member for the Hampton Roads Action Program.

During BCDI-Hampton Roads' 2018 Barnes & Noble Annual Book Fair, Affiliate members celebrated and encouraged literacy and language development with story time sessions on Saturday, May 19, 2018. This year's featured guests and special readers included Dr. Terri L. Best, School Board Member of Newport News Public Schools, and Mr. Jason Samuels, School Board Member of Hampton City Schools.
